Birds + Black

IMG_0512As a card carrying member of the ABC (Afraid of Birds Club) I am probably the last person in the world you would expect to see in a bird print dress! But my friends at OASAP got me with the colors, the shape and the price ($29) of this dress!
This dress was originally purchased for my upcoming trip to Paris, but I couldn’t just let it sit in my closet! This was my first order from the site and let me tell you it won’t be my last! This dress makes quite the statement, so I left it as the focal point for my look and styled it with basic black tights, black chelsea boots and my black ‘Pashli‘.

My Style Icons: Diana Vreeland

Do you know Diana Vreeland?

As editor for both Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, Diana Vreeland served as one of fashion’s first it girls. With a sassy mouth and an amazing sense of style she set the foundation for all major fashion players.

Some of my favorite things about Diane Vreeland are:

1. She rarely left the house before noon, and she often conducted serious business from her tub.

2. Her first column for Harper’s Bazaar was titled, “Why don’t you?”

3. In 1960 when John F. Kennedy became president, Diana Vreeland advised the First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in matters of style. “I can remember Jackie Kennedy, right after she moved into the White House…It wasn’t even like a country club, if you see what I mean-plain.”

4. Diana Vreeland “discovered” actress Lauren Bacall in the 1940s

5. Diana coined the term “Faction.” As in both fact and fiction, because, as she once explained, “why not make a story more interesting?”

Here are a few of my favorite Diana Vreeland quotes:

“I’ve never met a leopard print I didn’t like.”
“You gotta have style. It helps you get up in the morning. It’s a way of life. Without it you’re nobody. And I’m not talking about a lot of clothes.”
“Style: All who have it share one thing – ORIGINALITY.”
” We all need a splash of bad taste; no taste is what I am against.”
“I loathe narcissism but I approve of vanity.”
“Pink is the navy blue of India.”

The Road to Asti

IMG_0343

I love nothing more than a quick getaway up north to Sonoma County to the little town of Asti. To get to Asti from San Francisco we jumped on the Golden Gate Bridge and headed north. The views from the bridge that day were just exceptional. It was a very clear day and it seemed as if the entire city was sailing on the bay. While the views from the bridge were exceptional the views from inside our car were the opposite! Picture three ladies (Ash, Dlo and Kat) and three dogs (Bear, Benji and Oscar) in a packed suburban! Once the dogs calmed down and the sparkling water (hello car sickness/hangover) kicked in we were good to go…about 30 minutes north of the city!
Now when most people think of Sonoma County they think of wine. There are some of the best wineries and restaurants in the world in Sonoma County. However, there is also when of the best T.J. Maxx stores in the world on the road to Asti! In the little town of Petaluma lies the ultimate T.J. Maxx. I have never been a #maxxinista, but when Dlo says we need to pullover in Petaluma, we pull over!
Inside the magical T.J. Maxx we found some AMAZING deals. We are talking major designers: Valentino, Alice + Olivia, Rag and Bone, DVF and Brian Atwood on the ‘runway’ racks as soon as you walk in. Now, we didn’t have a lot of time to shop because only service dog, Benji could join us in the store and the other dogs were un-patiently waiting for his in the car. We quickly hit the ‘runway’ racks, handbags, accessories, beauty and shoes! After a mini-marathon shopping spree I scored a pair of Valentino Mary Janes for $130 and Alice + Olivia shorts for $30! Dlo scored the DVF boots I am wearing for $99 and Ash went home with a cropped Ralph Lauren sweater for $10 and a ton of beauty products! This T.J. Maxx visit made me a major #maxxinista!
About a hour later we arrived in Asti and did what you are supposed to do in Sonoma County…drink wine and have a photo shoot!

Sonoma Sunrise with Billy Reid

IMG_0304I am a little embarrassed to share that I discovered Billy Reid on an episode of, ‘Its a Brad Brad World.’ On this episode Brad and his assistant Lindsay travel to Alabama and view Billy’s latest collection. Lindsay describes Billy’s design aesthetic as,” …dressing like a sexy pioneer!”
With that in mind I decided to pack my ‘new to me’ Billy Reid dress for a quick getaway to Sonoma. This dress was the perfect piece to just throw on and enjoy the breathtaking Sonoma sunrise with the pups!
