Do you know Diana Vreeland?
As editor for both Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, Diana Vreeland served as one of fashion’s first it girls. With a sassy mouth and an amazing sense of style she set the foundation for all major fashion players.
Some of my favorite things about Diane Vreeland are:
1. She rarely left the house before noon, and she often conducted serious business from her tub.
2. Her first column for Harper’s Bazaar was titled, “Why don’t you?”
3. In 1960 when John F. Kennedy became president, Diana Vreeland advised the First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in matters of style. “I can remember Jackie Kennedy, right after she moved into the White House…It wasn’t even like a country club, if you see what I mean-plain.”
4. Diana Vreeland “discovered” actress Lauren Bacall in the 1940s
5. Diana coined the term “Faction.” As in both fact and fiction, because, as she once explained, “why not make a story more interesting?”
Here are a few of my favorite Diana Vreeland quotes:
“I’ve never met a leopard print I didn’t like.” “You gotta have style. It helps you get up in the morning. It’s a way of life. Without it you’re nobody. And I’m not talking about a lot of clothes.” “Style: All who have it share one thing – ORIGINALITY.” ” We all need a splash of bad taste; no taste is what I am against.” “I loathe narcissism but I approve of vanity.” “Pink is the navy blue of India.”For more on Diana check out her autobiography, “D.V.” and documentary, “Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel.“
She is one of ours too. #1 She rarely left the house before noon & conducted serious business from the tub. Now that’s the dream!
