Restoration Hardware Yountville

Last week I hit the road with my girls from San Francisco to Yountville for the ultimate ladies who lunch adventure at the new Restoration Hardware Yountville.

On a Thursday morning it took us about an hour and a half to get there (after a quick stop at Rustic Bakery in the Marin Country Mart <- worth the stop). Yountville is about twenty minutes north of downtown Napa and my new favorite stop when exploring wine country. If you love wine and luxury then you will love Yountville.

RH Yountville features a standalone full-service restaurant and wine tasting room with parking in the middle of the two structures. You can snag food, wine, coffee, and shop the latest Restoration Hardware designs in one spot. Restoration Hardware Yountville is also right in the heart of town and just steps away from some of my favorite tasting rooms in Yountville.

I made a reservation for five for lunch about a week before we dined there without a problem. There was a bit of a wait when we got there giving us plenty of time to snap some photos. The lighting is AMAZING so charge your phone and be prepared to take a photo of pretty much everything. The entire space is an Instagram Restoration Hardware dream!

After about a twenty-minute wait we were seated and shortly greeted by our lovely server. Everything from the place settings to the champagne flutes had a Restoration Hardware special touch. The food was solid and priced accordingly for the neighborhood. I shared the burger and shrimp cocktail with a friend and it was perfect for an afternoon in wine country. The entire experience was opulent + excellent and I will 100% be back.

Any trip to Napa always includes a trip to Yountville and RH…even during COVID-19. This visit to RH Yountville was VERY different from my initial visit. Reservations are a MUST for any experience at the venue and I highly recommend making a reservation ASAP. Masks must be worn anytime you are not seated at the table (industry-standard pretty much everywhere in the Bay Area) and it was strictly enforced.

Service was OUT OF THIS WORLD. I could have spent the entire afternoon just chatting with our waiter. He suggested the burrata after we ordered a bottle of bubbles, an excellent pairing with our prawns to start. From there, we went with the crispy artichokes and the shaved ribeye on charred garlic bread (a dip sandwich). I would 100% suggest making a reservation and copying our exact order!

What I Ate: The Popeyes Spicy Chicken Sandwich

I did it. At 10:33 am on 8/24/2019, I placed an emergency Uber Eats order to the Popeyes on 1426 Fillmore St in San Francisco. Why? Because the internet told me to.  I’d never even tried Popeyes fried chicken and oh, by the way, I wasn’t even hungry and just happened to be two weeks deep into the keto dietAdios ketosis!

Now, this was not my first attempt at ordering the Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich. Every time I saw it show up on my Instagram feed I checked the Uber Eats and Postmates apps to see if the infamous chicken sandwich was available and it was always sold out. But on 8/24 the day before my 33rd birthday and just three minutes after Popeyes opened up shop, the spicy chicken sandwich was available on the Uber Eats app. It was only available as a Spicy Chicken Sandwich Combo so I went with it and ordered two. I didn’t even look at the drink and side options and hit order as quickly as possible.

$30.08 and thirty minutes later I was the proud owner of two Spicy Chicken Sandwich Combos. Now let’s talk about the drink and side options. This was my major mistake. The Uber Eats app automatically selected unsweet iced tea and cajun fries for you. Did I need two of each? Absolutely not. I would have 100% preferred a fountain soda (to cure my hangover), mashed potatoes, maybe some condiments and a biscuit. Unfortunately, all I got was two iced teas, two orders of cajun fries and two spicy chicken sandwiches.

To be honest, I didn’t really touch the iced teas or the fries. I fired up my camera and had a full-on photo shoot with my spicy chicken sandwiches. I placed them on a piece of marble, I scattered the fries around them and then I stacked them on top of each other and carried them out to the courtyard of my building -> producing the photo above.

About twenty minutes later I was done with my shoot and ready to eat.

The sandwich itself was very basic. It features a slab of crunchy fried chicken breast on brioche with pickles and mayonnaise. It comes in two varieties: the mayonnaise can be either spicy or not. I went with the spicy. The highlights for the sandwich included the brioche (very elevated in my mind for Popeyes) and the pickles (love a thick cut juicy pickle).

Am I glad I tried it? Yes. Do I need to eat it again? Nah dog. We have plenty of premium fried chicken option here in San Francisco and honestly if I am going for a spicy fried chicken sandwich I prefer more of a Nashville hot chicken-style sandwich versus a fried chicken sandwich with ‘spicy’ mayonnaise.

Have you tried it? If your answer is no it looks like you lost your shot (for now). Just two weeks after the launch of the fried chicken sandwich the chain announced yesterday that it’s going to temporarily stop serving it. Bummer for now, but I have a strong hunch that it will be back ASAP.

If you are in the Bay Area here are some of my favorite spots when I’m craving a fried chicken sandwich:

Hotbird – Hot Chicken Sandwich | find them at the Sunday Off the Grid Presidio Picnic and they just secured a permanent home on Market Street

Shake Shack – Chick’n Shack | Marin and Palo Alto

Starbird – Nashville Hotbird | San Francisco, SFO, Foster City, San Jose, and Sunnyvale

Hillstone – Ding’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich | everywhere | the best restaurant in all the land

What spots did I forget? Sound off in the comments.

What I Ate: BottleRock Napa 2019

Fashion Blogger KatWalkSF, Amanda Weis and Antoni from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

BottleRock Napa 2019

Every Memorial Day Weekend I pack my bags and head up to Napa for BottleRock. BottleRock is probably the only summer music festival where you can watch Morimoto break a world record on the culinary stage for slicing 100 pieces of 3.5 ounces of tuna from a 205-pound fish in 12 minutes and 49 seconds, spend $60 on a bottle of Decoy Rose (multiple times) and snag a selfie with Antoni from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

But the driving force bringing me to Napa year after year is the food and the food at BottleRock Napa 2019 did NOT disappoint…even if it did leave me with an empty wallet.

Spicy tuna handrolls from one of my favorite spots in Napa, Morimoto Napa. I could have easily had 5 of these, but at $14 a pop, only one was in my budget (the other was for a friend)!

What’s a music festival without a cocktail?

Ad Hoc

A $60 bucket of fried chicken from Thomas Keller's Ad Hoc at BottleRock Napa.

This year is the first time Thomas Keller’s Yountville restaurant Ad Hoc has offered a bucket full of its moist yet crispy fried chicken. Finished with a sprinkling of fresh rosemary and salt this was a MAJOR highlight for me at BottleRock…

However, the famed Ad Hoc buttermilk fried chicken was one of the most expensive meals at the festival’s Culinary Garden at $60 a bucket!

Was it worth it?

100% YES

La Calenda

La Calenda carnitas tacos at BottleRock Napa

For a bit of a more affordable Thomas Keller experience (for bay area standards that is), we also hit up his new spot, La Calenda.

The Oaxacan cuisine offerings, which includes three tacos for $16 was also selling chips, guacamole, and salsa for another $16!

The elote (grilled sweet corn) from La Calenda was also a major hit for me, even if corn on the cob almost ALWAYS gets stuck in my teeth!

What I Ate: Shake Shack Marin

Custard Concretes, Crinkle Cut Fries and Burgers from the Shake Shack Marin

The wait is over! Shake Shack at Marin Country Mart in Larkspur is open!

and if you are anything like me you are ready to grub on a ShackBurger and come crispy crinkle cut fries. I hit up Shake Shack Marin this week and the drive from San Francisco to Larkspur is short and well worth it to get your Shake Shack fix.

In addition to their classic menu, Shake Shack has created a unique selection of menu items exclusive to Marin including the Bay Area-exclusive Golden State Double, a Richards Grassfed Beef double cheddar cheeseburger topped with pickles and smoked garlic aioli (center burger in the top photo).
For dessert, Shake Shack will be spinning frozen custard concretes in collaboration with local purveyors Pie Dreams and Dandelion Chocolate. They were already sold out of the chocolate option when I was there, but I got down with the Pie Dreams concrete.

Want to get tipsy at Shake Shack Marin?

Good news! You can wash down your burgers with local brews from Fort Point Beer Company, 21st Amendment Brewery, Lagunitas Brewing Company and North Coast Brewing Co. plus Shake Shack’s exclusive Brooklyn Brewery ShackMeister® Ale. Wine lovers can enjoy a glass of Shack Red and Shack White wine from the Gotham Project as well as a local wine list highlighting producers such as Broc Cellars, Hunt & Harvest, BREA Wine Company and Robert Sinskey Vineyards

How do you get there?

I drove and it took less than 20 minutes to get there on a Tuesday afternoon. There is plenty of parking in the Marin Country Mart. I seem to always find parking near the SoulCycle. No car, no problem. Jump on the ferry to Larkspur, cross the street and you are at Shake Shack Marin.

What to order:

Start with a ShackBurger (especially if it is your first visit), crinkle cut fries, Chick’n Bites, and a concrete. Round two go for a Chick’n Shack and cheese fries.San Francisco blogger KatWalkSF visits the newly opened Shake Shack Marin.
